Fastnet Stages Rally 2011 - 30th October 2011

Motorsport Photographer Sligo The West Lodge Hotel in Bantry was the headquarters for the Fastnet Stages Rally. The move from it's traditional home in Skibbereen has paid off for the organisers with the town of Banty putting on a great welcome for the event with the service area in the town center, park and ride facilities, a selection of business offering a 10% reduction on Saturday and after a two year absence Eugene Donnelly running 5th on the road, what more could you need...... Their was a lot of Fog on Sunday, making condition difficult for the drivers. A puncture for Donnelly on Stage 1 meant he lost over a minute, he gradually clawed it back during the day to finish second, only 6 seconds down on the winner Daragh O'Riordan.

Danny Barry and Gordon Noble were victorious in the 2011 Germaines of Baltinglass Mini Stages Rally in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 10, almost two minutes ahead of Thomas Fitzmaurice and Fionn Foley (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9), with Trevor Culbert and Ray Fitzpatrick in third place (Ford Escort RS), finishing as the top two wheel drive crew.

Motorsport Photographer Sligo has Images from the Harvest Stages Rally which was based in Redcastle.The penultimate round of the Dunlop National Rally Championship started with very wet conditions and for the second Year in a row Garry Jennings and his Letterkenny co-driver, Rory Kennedy held off a late challenge from Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry to win the event, Jennings who had originally planned to drive a Subaru WRC, reverted to his Mitsubishi and finished five seconds ahead of Maguire. Gary McPhillips/Gary McNern (Escort) were third – one minute and 32 seconds further behind. The Group N category was won by Trevor Bustard/Kenny Bustard (Mitsubishi).

Motorsport Photographer Sligo A Ceremonial Start on Saturday night on the Main Street in Loughrea had the top twenty cars and drivers and all the local Galway competitors. The base for the Rally was the
Lough Rea Hotel and Spa. The over night rain cleared quickly and as the roads dried out, the times began to fall, Tim McNulty and Paul Kiely were fastest on every stage and won the Rally with almost 3 minutes to spare

Motorsport Photographer Sligo Has Images from the 27th Warriors run. The Event based in Strandhill had 800 entrants. The Warriors Run takes competitors from the Cannon Gun at the beachfront in Strandhill to the top of Knocknarea, around Queen Maeves Cairn and back to the beachfront again. For the uninitiated, a 15 Kilometre race might seem easy. Not the Warriors Run! The race is classified as a road and hill race or multi-terrained, so whilst approximately nine of its kilometres are on paved roads, it is the special six kilometres in the middle, to the top of Knocknarea that gives the race its bite. These six kilometres include a 700 foot climb through fields, loose gravel, unsurfaced and heather paths. At its steepest incline on the way up, even the most professional athlete slows to a walk and then brace themselves to face the equally daunting downhill run, back down the often slippery slopes, even in the driest of weather.

The 3 Stages were in a compact loop with small road mileage and easy access. The HQ for the event was the Clonmel Park Hotel. A few heavy showers of Rain made conditions tricky. Wedding Photographer Sligo has Images from the 19th James Morrison Festival in Riverstown.

James or Jim Morrison known as "The Professor", was a notable South Sligo-style Irish fiddler. Morrison was born in 1893 near Riverstown, County Sligo at the townland of Drumfin. Morrison grew up in a community steeped in traditional Irish culture especially music and at the age of 17 he was employed by the Gaelic League to tutor the Connacht style of step dancing at the Gaelic League school in County Mayo.

In 1915, at the age of 21, he emigrated to America and settled in New York. In 1918, Morrison won the fiddle competition at the New York Feis. Morrison become associated with other leading Irish musicians such as Michael Coleman, Paddy Killoran who were also from County Sligo.

Morrison was one of the leading Irish music teachers in New York in the 1930s and '40s. In addition to the fiddle, he could play the flute and button accordion (and wrote a tutor on the latter) and taught hundreds of young Irish-American students to play traditional music on various instruments.

What a better opener for the 30^th Sligo Stages, than bringing the main field and local crews into the heart of the city along the banks of the Garavogue River on Friday evening last. As the evening remained dry for the ceremonial start, a large crowd congregated to experience the atmosphere of the cars crossing the start ramp. Complementing the festivities members of the Cairde Festival entertained the gathering to live street theatre .The Quinn Body Repairs /Sligo Park Hotel - Sligo Stages Rally kicked off to a great start in the presence of Mayor Rosleen O Grady , Tony Mc Loughlin TD , Senator Mark Mc Sharry , Chamber of Commerce Chairman Gerry Moore , WRC Navigator Chris Patterson, M I Ambassador on the Road Safety campaign Toni Kelly , Motorsport President Joe Corcoran and Monica Tighe on behalf of Quinn Body Repairs.

The competitive element of the event fired up as the 121 strong fields left parc ferme destined for the Gusclad stage in Gevagh. The hot favourite in the pristine Skoda Fabia S2000 Robert Barrable, who lived up to his reputation to set fastest even though he commented of the stage as being very slippery and greasy in places.Corkman, Daragh O Riordan came into the finish of the stage near Arigna just three seconds a drift even though he suffered with a possible dose of flue.Colm Murphy setting fastest Group N a further twelve seconds off and just one second on his perusing class rival, Garry Jennings. Three times winner in Sligo Niall Maguire, sustained a puncture near the end of the stage costing him a little time .Wesley Patterson was the fastest two wheel drive over the Gevagh mountain as Roy White in the MG lost a lot of time when a water bottle strayed under the pedals . The ground hugging Darrian of the Welsh crew Washington James and Llionas Jones Davis persuing the same class 14 was well of the pace on , ten seconds off the Escort.

The field headed towards the second, Team P R Reilly sponsored stage 2 located in the Arigna valley overshadowed by the wind turbines. The WRC Impreza of O Riordan was to endure a further deficit as the S2000 car took a further fourteen seconds, widening that leadership gap further. Gary Jennings starting his Group N charge set third fastest although Murphy, Barrett and Maguire set practically identical time on that second stage. The last stage of the first loop and the longest, the Gulf sponsored Blast Hill was not to affect the leaderboard although the Subaru of O Riordan was to set a three seconds faster time on this one .On the local front local disappointment was filtering through, that Domnic Mc Loughlin and his young nephew Brian had retired at the end of stage two when the gearbox lost a few gears. The 00 safety car of Martin Kearns also had quite a moment when early on stage three slipped off on a tight right hander beaching the car on a high ditch. Early on leader of Group N Colm Murphy entered service quite disappointed that his push on Jennings lead had come to an end as the gearbox gave up the goat forcing his retirement in service .Another prominent retirement was the MG of Roy White.

On the second loop the fight between the Subaru and the leading Skoda of Barrable continued but once again on the Blast Hill stage three, O Riordan set fastest tightening that margin entering service for the second occasion to just eight seconds. Border Championship leader entering Sligo, James Cassidy spoiled his chances of maintains the lead, putting his Escort off on the second loop. It was also on Stage four that highest seeded local club member , John Mc Gettrick was to have quite a moment , dropping the car off a bank on a challenging right only to recover and continue on losing only about a minute .Leading the locals after six stages was David Leonard with young Daragh Mullen in the Saxo .
With the leadership battle firmly between the two top crews and Jennings comfortable in control of Group N it was Barrett who was to sneak into third place although any possibility of advancing into second was well out of the reach with only three stages to go.
On the final stage of the day young Robert Barrable entered with a margin of twenty nine seconds but once again the Subaru of Darragh O Riordan set fastest on the stage which took them to the back of Ballitogher .With the best efforts , closing that gap to eleven seconds at the end of the day was not enough to topple the Skoda , and Robert Barrable was to secure his first National Championship win in Sligo.
Many locals were among the awards at the prizegiving function which took place in the Sligo Park Hotel later that evening.
Ballymote crew Damien Scanlon with Paul Wims on the notes picked up third in Class 2.Jarlath Barry and Paul Gallagher on their first outing since a big off in the 2009 Mini Stages captured the second class award in class three. David Leonard and Daragh Mullen came home at eighteenth overall and had a comfortable Class eleven margin to pick up first in class and they were also presented the Dunlop Championship drive of the day. After a day of drama on stage four Ballymote crew John Mc Gettrick and James Mc Dermott was awarded the Connacht Motor Club award for , the highest placed club crew not already in receipt of an award. Stage sponsor Ian Gunning with Fred Holmes on notes was the highest local crew to complete the rally at seventeenth overall. Andrew Mullen and Elaine, sponsors of the Border Championship finished at nineteenth overall in the Evo 9 . Gary and Alan Quinn from Ballymote brought their class 13 Manta back to the finish ramp at thirty fifth overall.Dromahairs ,Kieran Carroll with John Conway on the notes on this occasion brought their Civic home in 37^th spot.Enda Haran accompanied by Gary Gallagher was happy to take the car across the finish ramp at 38^th position having encountered a puncture early on .David Quinn another of the Ballymote family with colleague Wesley Shaw finished at fifty third place .Barry Gallagher and G Johnston had a good first run in the Escort coming home at 59^th place having the difficulty of catching a number of drivers on stages. Finishing at 64th, Patrick Corcoran and Sean Harte were happy to take the car home relatively unmarked .Martin Ewing and M Currid in the 205 finished 65^th .Derek Chambers and Chris Mitchel came in at 71^st.David Hunt from Gurteen and Gillian Gilmartin took their 106 home at 73.Andy Heekin and Frank Egan 74^th .Alan Lawson and Brian Boyd 75^th.Kieran Henry and Aidan Gannon at 78^th. Mark Murphy and Keith Branley at 80^th.Ronan Kerrigan and Leon Mc Gowan at 81^st .The accomplished Navigator getting his first taste of driving Niall Burns with Aaron Dolan came in at 83^Rd although the did have an incident on Stage five.The Border Championship Drive of the day went to Shane Maguire in Class four. West Cork Rally 2011

Motorsport Photographer Sligo In the closest of close finishes Robert Barrable and his co driver Damien Connelly have scored a great victory here in West Cork. Their Skoda S2000 finished just over a second in front of Daragh O’Riordan/Tony McDaid in their Subaru WRC. The HQ for the Rally was the Quality Hotel in Clonakilty. Barrable seemed to be slow through the penultimate stage when he caught up with Colm Murphy. This allowed O’Riordan to close to within 0.9 of a second that meant that it was all down to the spectator stage which was run through the streets of Clonakilty. Barrable gave it one last push to set the fastest time and win the rally. His actual stage time was just over a second up on O’Riordan. It was a very tight finish and after 2 days of high speed action through the roads of West Cork only 1.3 seconds separated the top 2. Colm Murphy and his co driver Don Montgomery who led for most of the rally had to be content with 3rd place. Just a few Images below from the event starting with Barrable and Connelly.

Wedding Photographer Sligo Has Images from Today's Event. Over one hundred children from Carbury National School, Mercy Primary School, St John’s National School and Sligo School Project have today (Wednesday 17^th November) attended a ‘Keep Safe’ event at Sligo Fire Station. A range of state agencies and organisations came together to deliver the programme which is directed at 5th and 6th class pupils. It aims to promote safety and community awareness through involving the children in a series of interactive scenarios with a strong safety theme. The aims of the one day ‘Keep Safe’ event are to help children to:

become aware of personal and home safety,
learn how to react to dangerous situations,
foster good citizenship,
learn how to recognise hazards and manage risks,
learn how to stay safe within the context of, for example, road safety, water safety, fire safety and site safety.

The agencies and organisations that were represented on the day include the Health and Safety Authority, Junior Achievement Ireland, Bus Éireann, Construction Industry Federation, Civil Defence, ESB Networks, Sligo Fire Service, Garda Síochána, Irish Coast Guard, Sligo-Leitrim Mountain Rescue and Sligo County Council (road safety).

Motorsport Photographer Sligo has Images from a Great event based at the City North Hotel. The event is a round 4 of the Loughransigns.com Midlands East Rally Championship, round 5 of the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship and round 5 of the Mitsubishi Evolution Challange. Damian Cole and his co driver Craig Drew have scored a great victory here today following a dramatic final few stages. Cole was having a great dice with local driver Michael Barrable, but Barrable dropped 15s in stage 8 and has fallen back to 2nd place. Barrable and his co driver Damien Connolly had led from the start despite a misfire in their Focus WRC.

The afternoon was breezy and thankfully we had only one shower of rain. After the ceremony we took a small detour to a scenic spot near the brides home.

Motorsport Photographer Sligo has images from a great event in Sligo today. Melvin Evans and Patrick Walsh won the Rally by over a minute with Niall Maguire and Enda Sherry in second and Kevin Barret and Sean Mullally in third. A few showers of rain during the day made the Tyre choice crucial.

GT900 is a 3 day prestige car tour of Ireland in aid of the Hope Founditation. Images from the event can be viewed on my web site motorsport photographer sligo. The tour started in Cork on Friday and traveled to Limerick, Today they were traveling from Limerick to Sligo via Westport, I caught up with the tour as they came into Oughterard. In Sligo an after dinner speech by a very entertaining Perry McCarthy (the original Stig) was a fitting end to a great day.

After the shocking news from the Donegal International Rally on Saturday afternoon, this Evening I made the journey to Longwood in Co.Meath to pay my respects to the Maguire family. Tommy was full of life and never afraid to make friends. He was well known by everyone and was always looking for a good photo of himself or even one for his brother. When he was a student at Sligo IT Tommy always managed to get a lift back to Sligo on Sunday no matter where the Rally was.

Melvan Evans/Patrick Walsh won Today's Circuit of Munster Rally. More Image on my Web Site Motorsport Photographer Sligo They finished 20 second's ahead of Niall Maguire/Enda Sherry. Kevin Barrett/Sean Mullally were a further 30 seconds behind in third. Maguire retains his lead of the series.
The Group N category was won by Eamonn Daly/Brian Doherty and Ed Synan/Denis O'Connell won the Modified category.

Derek McGarrity won the Sperrins Rally on the very last stage. My web site Motorsport Photographer Sligo has some of the action. Derek and his co driver James McKee started the stage 13s in arrears of Sean Devine but recorded a time 16s faster than their Subaru rival.

Niall as a driver marks up his sixth victory on the rally a new record while Enda Sherry becomes the first person to win the rally four years in a row as a co driver.

Images from today's Rally have be loaded to my web site. The base for the event was the Carlton Hotel in Tralee. Four times over the last few years there has been a tiebreak to decide the winner of this Circuit of Kerry Rally. Kevin Barrett led the rally by 7s going into the final stage, McGarrity was 7s faster on the 17km stage. The tiebreak rule states: “Fastest on the last stage wins”. So Derek McGarrity and his co-driver James McKee follow up their Circuit of Ireland victory last weekend with the win here in Tralee. www.jamesburke.biz

Tonight's full Moon is a "Blue Moon." It's the second full Moon this month and the first Blue Moon to fall on New Year's Eve in nearly 20 years. Sounds like a rare excuse for a party... There's more. In Europe, Africa and Asia, the Blue Moon will dip into Earth's shadow for a partial lunar eclipse. At maximum eclipse, around 19:24 Universal Time, approximately 8% of the Moon will be darkly. Blue Moons are rare (once every 2.5 years). Blue Moons on New Year's Eve are rarer still (once every 19 years).

The Wedding took place in Coolaney and the reception was in the Radisson Hotel in Sligo. We went to the Beach in Rosses Point, with a Snow caped Benbulbin for a back drop.

Kenmare Historic Stages Rally 2009 (Sunday)

The rally is divided into four main categories. The Historics run first on the road then it is the Post Historics, followed by Classics, and then it will be the fastest cars, the Modifieds, running behind.

Kenmare Historic Rally 2009

Today I made the Long Journey for the Historic Rally. Traditionly Held in Killarney it has moved just down the road to Kenmare. On route I took the N71 from Killarney to Kenmare this is the Molls Gap Stage, sadley it is not being used this year. The Rain is Heavy here today and their is a lot of standing water on the stages. The Rain is to ease overnight with more on the way for the morning.

The Club Heald a Mini Run Today, the route took them over some of the old stages, Healy Pass, Cod's Head, Ardgroom and Kilmacalogue.

Fastnet Stages Rally 2009

A long trip to Skibbereen in West Cork fot the Fastnet Rally. This is the final round of the Dunlop National Rally Champioship with 7 Stages in a 3,3,1 format. Patrick Elliott need a top 3 finish to take the National Championship and Niall Maguire has to win and Patrick Elliott has to finish outside the top 3 for him to take the National Championship. The Stages were slippy and a lot of over night rain left some standing water in places. After the First Loop and with the Stages drying out Denis Cronin took the Lead and eventully won the Rally with Melvyn Evans 2nd and Niall Maguire 3rd, Elliott finished 4th and is the 2009 Dunlop National Rally Champion.

The good weather was a welcome change from the last two events. The Service Park was based in the grounds of the Hillgrove Hotel. The Fast Flowing Stages set by COC Dessie Keenan went down well with all the competiors, Daniel McKenna and Andrew Grennan won the event.
